As a seasoned soap maker, I have been “holding” on making any Tallow soap until a good source of the main ingredient from pastured cows, local enough to me that it made sense to utilize what was available, presented itself to me. And lo and behold, this was the year! These soaps are a full 80% Tallow from pastured cows. These cows lived in the Sierra foothills on a small family ranch, not in a big herd, not in a commercial operation of any sort. This Tallow was carefully rendered by hand prior to use in the soap making process.

These photos are NOT color enhanced – the rich, buttery color you see in many of the bars comes straight from the raw, rendered Tallow and shines through in the finished soap. Some bars will retain the color for quite some time before turning a nice pure off-white, other bars seem to retain the color almost indefinitely. Color in soaps delivered to the customer WILL vary. This is a good-sized shower bar, taller than most “standard bars” by just a bit. Minimum bar weights are 4.4 oz each and they measure about 3.3” x .9” x 2.6”.

As mentioned above, these soaps have been carefully formulated with 80% Tallow, with the remaining 20% of oils weight in the batch being comprised of high-quality organic Coconut Oil (for amazing cleansing and bubbles) and Castor Oil (for stable lather in your bars). As usual, we use food-grade sodium hydroxide (lye) and distilled water, a touch of Tussah Silk for added softness in use, and that's it! No detergents, phtalates, dyes, or fragrance. Bars scented with pure Essential Oils are also available for purchase.

Tallow has a very similar lipid (fatty acid) profile to healthy human skin. Tallow is often thought of as a “skin superfood” and is a primary ingredient in many high-end moisturizing and skin-healing formulations, since it provides superior moisturizing benefits without blocking up the cell barrier like petroleum-based products are known to do. Specifically, it is high in Oleic Acid, Palmitic Acid and Stearic Acid – all known for their ability to penetrate the skin deeply and for various skin barrier, repair and regenerative functions. It's also full of fat-soluble Vitamins A, D, E, and K. It has an almost perfect 1:1 ratio of Alpha Linolenic and Linolenic Acids (also known as Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids), which may be useful for skin's immune response and anti-inflammatory functions. Palmitic and Palmitoleic acid (both found in Tallow) both decrease in our own skin as we age, are building blocks for skin's structure, and have good antimicrobial and skin smoothing properties.

These soaps are being offered with a fun “Happy Cow” stamp bearing the words “Handmade Tallow Soap” below the cow, stamped onto the center of each bar. The tops have a fun chevron “sweep” design across half the bar. They are available as plain (unscented) bars or scented with one of two Essential Oil blends: Orange & Patchouli or Cedarwood & Black Pepper (simply choose your desired variety from the drop-down menu below). The unscented bars have a lightly spicy natural scent, but DO NOT have the strong “beefy” odor often associated with some Tallow soaps. Scented bars have a light, not overpowering odor.

Ingredients (Cedarwood & Black Pepper blend): Tallow from pasture-raised cows, Distilled Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Cedarwood & Black Pepper, Castor Oil, Tussah Silk.

Ingredients (Orange & Patchouli blend): Tallow from pasture-raised cows, Distilled Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Orange & Patchouli, Castor Oil, Tussah Silk.

All of our Tallow soap bars are cured a minimum of 8 weeks.

Packaging: Your handmade creation will arrive with an aesthetic card tied on with thin-guage cotton twine, bearing the soap name and full ingredients. In keeping with a greener business model we work to avoid waste in packaging wherever possible and to use the fewest plastic products possible.

We recommend that you perform a patch test prior to using any new bath & body product. Our ingredients include (but are not limited to) natural botanicals, exfoliants (Ex: walnut hull, poppy seeds) , butters and oils, and essential and fragrance oils. It is possible for people to be sensitive to something as common as Palm oil and not be aware of it (especially if you have been using commercial soaps which are mostly detergents and surfectants), so please use all due caution.
